Tue Jul 10 19:07:16 BST 2012 ************************************************************************** * Slackware ARM v13.1 is now pronounced EOL (End of Life) * * Please upgrade your systems to the latest stable release for continued * * security updates. * * * * See: http://www.armedslack.org/ for release details * ************************************************************************** Mon Jun 25 07:48:08 UTC 2012 patches/packages/freetype-2.4.10-arm-1_slack13.1.tgz: Upgraded. Since freetype-2.4.8 many fixes were made to better handle invalid fonts. Many of them are vulnerabilities (see CVE-2012-1126 up to CVE-2012-1144 and SA48320) so all users should upgrade. (* Security fix *) +--------------------------+ patches/packages/bind-9.7.6_P1-arm-1_slack13.1.tgz: Upgraded. This release fixes an issue that could crash BIND, leading to a denial of service. It also fixes the so-called "ghost names attack" whereby a remote attacker may trigger continued resolvability of revoked domain names. For more information, see: http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2012-1033 http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2012-1667 IMPORTANT NOTE: This is a upgraded version of BIND, _not_ a patched one. It is likely to be more strict about the correctness of configuration files. Care should be taken about deploying this upgrade on production servers to avoid an unintended interruption of service. (* Security fix *) +--------------------------+ Wed May 23 17:14:07 UTC 2012 patches/packages/libxml2-2.7.6-arm-2_slack13.1.tgz: Rebuilt. Minor version bump, this also works around a hard to trigger heap overflow in glibc (glibc zoneinfo caching vuln). For there to be any possibility to trigger the glibc bug within vsftpd, the non-default option "chroot_local_user" must be set in /etc/vsftpd.conf. Considered 1) low severity (hard to exploit) and 2) not a vsftpd bug :-) Nevertheless: (* Security fix *) +--------------------------+ Sat Feb 4 08:21:16 UTC 2012 patches/packages/coreutils-8.15-arm-1_slack13.1.tgz: Upgraded. We're not able to support a security fork of PHP 5.2.x here either, so you'll have to just bite the bullet on this. You'll be better off in the long run. :) (* Security fix *) +--------------------------+ Sun Aug 14 21:14:43 UTC 2011 patches/packages/bind-9.4_ESV_R5-arm-1_slack13.1.tgz: Upgraded. This BIND update addresses a couple of security issues: * named, set up to be a caching resolver, is vulnerable to a user querying a domain with very large resource record sets (RRSets) when trying to negatively cache the response. Due to an off-by-one error, caching the response could cause named to crash. [RT #24650] [CVE-2011-1910] * Change #2912 (see CHANGES) exposed a latent bug in the DNS message processing code that could allow certain UPDATE requests to crash named. (* Security fix *) +--------------------------+ Wed Apr 27 18:32:08 UTC 2011 tcl/tk-8.5.8-arm-2.tgz: Rebuilt. The previous build set incorrect permissions on /usr/lib which prevented non-root users from being able to login. The package is included in the main tree so that users downloading a fresh 13.1 tree will have a system that allows non-root users to login immediately following installation. For existing users who have installations where non-root users cannot login, the easiest fix is to "chmod 755 /usr/lib" -- there is no need to upgrade to this build of the package. Thanks to Glyn Davies for the report. +--------------------------+ Thu Apr 21 21:51:59 UTC 2011 patches/packages/rdesktop-1.6.0-arm-2_slack13.1.tgz: Rebuilt. This update fixes an unbounded copy operation in sql_prepare_where() that could be exploited to execute arbitrary code. However, this only affects servers that use the sql_mod module (which Slackware does not ship), and in addition the ability to exploit this depends on an SQL injection bug that was already fixed in proftpd-1.3.2rc2 (this according to upstream). So in theory, this fix should only be of academic interest. But in practice, better safe than sorry. It's been a long time since the last stable release: we skipped 13.0 to start work on this new EABI port; and I think it's been well worth the wait! Thanks to everyone who has been involved with testing and contributing feedback for this release. Special thanks to Jim Hawkins who is often fixing build problems, and helping me tidy up behind the scenes. If you like Slackware ARM, please let us know! If you want to help fund the Slackware project, please visit the Slackware store at http://store.slackware.com Enjoy this release! Huge thanks to Robby Workman, Eric Hameleers, and Piter Punk for all the help with the main Slackware tree! ** IMPORTANT NOTES - PLEASE READ! ** 1. Kernels on the Kirkwood (SheevaPlug) platform ````````````````````````````````````````````` As the kernels increase in size, the addresses need to be changed in the U-Boot configuration to accomodate them. Please see section 5.0 of the INSTALL_SHEEVAPLUG.TXT document and adjust the addresses into which the initrd and kernel are loaded: Object old address new address uinitrd-kirkwood 0x0800000 0x01100000 uImage-kirkwood 0x400000 0x00800000 If you followed the installation instructions exactly (using the suggested partitioning scheme), you can paste the following into the u-boot console; otherwise use the "printenv" command to determine your current configuration, and adjust the addresses using those in the table above. Marvell>> setenv bootcmd_usb 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x01100000 /uinitrd-kirkwood ; ext2load usb 0:1 0x00800000 /uImage-kirkwood' Marvell>> setenv bootcmd 'usb start; setenv bootargs $(bootargs_console) $(bootargs_root); run bootcmd_usb ; bootm 0x00800000 0x01100000 ; reset' Marvell>> saveenv Marvell>> reset 2. udev version 151 and custom kernels ``````````````````````````````````` If you build your own kernel, please check /usr/doc/udev-151/README to ensure that your kernel meets udev's requirements. If it does not, you may find that your system's /dev is missing many character and block devices, which may include the storage from which your OS boots! 3. Mini root file system ````````````````````` The mini root file system of -current has also been upgraded to include the new packages. ftp://ftp.armedslack.org/armedslack/armedslack-devtools/minirootfs a/acpid-2.0.2-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded. a/bash-4.1.002-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded. a/coreutils-8.4-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded. a/cups-1.4.2-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded. Upgraded. The following changes have been made to the intial RAM discs: * Added "mvsdio" kernel module for SDHC cards * Added udev to automatically populate /dev which makes these initial RAM discs able to handle more complex setups out of the box (by default Busybox's "mdev" is used to populate /dev, but it was not finding the /dev/mmc* devices). Thanks to Cédric VINCENT for the suggestion. * Added LVM & RAID support binaries to the initrd's. The initial RAM discs can now support booting off SDHC (/dev/mmc*) cards. Thanks for the group on the Slackware ARM mailing list for the suggestions and testing. +--------------------------+ Fri Feb 5 15:32:54 UTC 2010 I have created a mini root filesystem of Slackware ARM current, based on the tree as of this update. The filesystem can be found at: ftp://ftp.armedslack.org/armedslack/armedslack-devtools/minirootfs The mini root filesystems are aimed at developers - the filesystems need configuring before they can be deployed on ARM hardware. There is a README.txt in that directory which provides more detail. I hope these are useful! I'll probably update the rootfs every few weeks. a/mtd-utils-050210-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded to a snapshot from 4th Feb 2010. a/u-boot-tools-2009.11.1-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded. ap/nano-2.2.2-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded. l/gmime-2.4.15-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded. xap/pan-0.133-arm-2.tgz: Rebuilt. This support will eventually be folded into the "kirkwood" kernel package, but at present the OpenRD client support is only available out of tree. The source used for this was taken from: git://repo.or.cz/linux-2.6/linux-2.6-openrd.git and includes a patch linked from the OpenRD googlegroups site, which adds support for the XGI graphics chipset. Note: this is an all-in-one package -- I've rolled the kernel modules in here too for easy maintenance. This addition is primarily to help me get started on providing out of the box support for the OpenRD client prior support appearing in the kernel.org mainline tree, and to make use of my OpenRD client that's been sitting idle since it arrived months ago! a/kernel-modules-kirkwood-2.6.32.7_kirkwood-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded. a/kernel-modules-versatile-2.6.32.7_versatile-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded. a/kernel_kirkwood-2.6.32.7-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded. a/kernel_versatile-2.6.32.7-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded. a/shadow-4.1.4.2-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded. a/sysvinit-scripts-1.2-noarch-2.tgz: Open a serial login on ttyS0 for any device that has "Marvell" in /proc/cpuinfo. This update fixes the following security issues. A misconfigured /etc/passwd with no defined home directory could allow security restrictions to be bypassed. mount.cifs could allow a local user to read the first line of an arbitrary file if installed setuid. (On Slackware, it was not installed setuid) Specially crafted SMB requests could cause a denial of service. This is the work-in-progress tree that, in time, will become the next release of Slackware ARM. This is primarily Slackware 13.0 with some updates where necessary (most of which should find their way back into Slackware-current). The major change to this version from Slackware ARM 12.2 is that we're using the EABI (Embedded ABI) (Slackware ARM 12.2 used the old/legacy ABI). The EABI is incompatible with the old ABI, so you *cannot* use packages from this or any future releases on an installation of Slackware ARM 12.2. The only way to ugprade is to back up your config files and do a fresh installation. The target architecture is armv4t which means that it can the user land can run on most of the ARM devices out there. Please note that this port is in its infancy, and whilst it's been stable for me for a few months, I expect there to be some problems with the packages. To report any problems & to help with the project, please join the mailing list: http://lists.armedslack.org Thanks & I hope you enjoy the new Slackware ARM port! Stuart Winter
